Why Hiding Our Nails Is Hiding Our Health: A Crisis the Beauty Industry Won’t Name
Weekends are for slowing down, right? For me, it’s tea in hand, nodding to neighbors, sometimes wondering if lobsters really live forever (don’t ask). But lately, my gaze drifts somewhere smaller: my nails.
I used to admire other people’s manicures—the glossy shine, the perfect polish, the “what color is that?” curiosity. Tiny luxuries at the end of our hands. But somewhere along the way, my own nails started talking back.
My nail story
Every time I polished mine, they waved the white flag. Thin. Brittle. Just… tired. I doubled down with gels (hello, spandex version of nails). They looked fabulous, but underneath? Splintered, peeling, retreating.
One day, I called it quits. No grand announcement, just me saying, “enough.” Since then, my nails have been au naturel, and, surprisingly, I don’t miss the salon chair.
Nails as Tiny Windows
Here’s the fascinating part: nails aren’t just fashion—they’re little windows into what’s happening inside your body. A pale ridge, a white dot, a disappearing half-moon… they aren’t beauty quirks. They can be subtle signals.
I remember noticing tiny white dots years ago. Later I learned they often tie back to low zinc (sometimes thanks to a high-carb diet). It made sense. My energy was off, the weight was creeping up, and nothing worked. When I shifted to a sensible low-carb plan, the dots faded. And so did the extra pounds.
Quick Clues (A Handy Guide 😉)
Your nails don’t come with a manual, so here’s a bite-sized one:
Vertical ridges — sometimes linked to low protein, B12, or iron.
A lunula isn’t visible when you’re under liver, heart, or metabolic stress.
Soft nails may suggest low calcium or vitamin D.
Brittle, splitting nails — could point to low iron or even low stomach acid.
Of course, nails can also be cranky thanks to gels, polish removers, or too much filing. But if you spot something unusual, snap a photo and show your doctor.

Because I love making wellness simple, I created a Nails Clues Card you can tuck into your Wellness Accent Vault. Print it, keep it by your mirror, and let it remind you—your body whispers before it shouts.
What helped me
After I ditched manicures and cleaned up my diet, my nails finally bounced back. The brittle days were behind me. More recently, I added Dr. Ardis’s BioDefense into the mix—and suddenly my nails are acting like teenagers at a rock concert. They grow so fast and strong that I catch myself laughing as I trim them down every single week.
